ASFB will be hosting a number of workshops before and during the conference.
Otolith Workshop
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) is presenting a unique and exciting opportunity to participate in a half day workshop to be held within the Eco-sciences precinct in Dutton Park. The workshop will run over three sessions.
Session one
Fishery monitoring staff will give a tour through their science laboratories, providing demonstrations and hands on training regarding:
biological data collection and otolith removal
Otolith processing (blocking, sectioning and mounting)
Otolith imaging and interpretation
Session two
A think tank session where participants will discuss an otolith themed topic (e.g. problem solving, Interpretation comparisons, different methods of analysis - more details to be provided at a later date).
Session three
A fun, interactive, networking session where participants will be provided pre course material to ‘study’ and provide an answer to a specific, otolith themed question/s. The group will then compare answers and discuss with a winner being ultimately crowned (prizes will be on offer!).
Date: Sunday 6th November
Time: Approximately 10:00AM-3:00PM
Cost: TBC (maximum $30pp)
Location: Ecosciences Precinct Dutton Park

ASFB Fish Welfare Workshop
Chair Prof. Culum Brown | Deputy Chair Prof. Rafael Freire
The workshop will gather ASFB members from every state and territory in Australia and NZ to a round table discussion. The workshop organisers will first provide an overview of existing animal welfare legislation (which is state specific in Australia - there is no federal oversight) as it pertains to fishes. Each participant will then provide a summary of how the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals in scientific research (the Code) is applied to fish research at their institution. In both instances we will identify where inconsistencies exist and how they might be addressed.
Date: Thursday 10 November 2022
Duration: half-day
Location: Crown Plaza Surfers Paradise
Price: Free
